Kwadwo Boateng, the Assembly Member for Bantama Ahenbronum electoral area, has provided details about the events that occurred between a final year student of the Akenten Appiah Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) and another individual, resulting in the student's death on September 1, 2024.

Initial reports suggested that the deceased student, identified as Kojo Okyere and known as Gye Nyame, had stolen an elderly woman's bag, leading to a confrontation and his subsequent death.

However, Kwadwo Boateng refuted these reports, stating that investigations conducted after the student's death contradicted the initial claims.

During an interview with Channel One TV, Kwadwo Boateng explained that the deceased, Kojo Okyere, was not a thief as initially believed. His investigation revealed that there was no theft involved.

He further clarified that the deceased was upset by the false accusation. This misunderstanding escalated into a physical altercation, ultimately resulting in the deceased being stabbed during the fight.

“What happened on Sunday is that the suspect called Believer was dating an escort. I used to see him around the vicinity at dawn hanging with these escorts. What caused the entire problem is that, the woman had accused the Gye Nyame [deceased] of snatching her bag. Lots of complaints came to my attention following the incident.

“Based on my investigation, I realized there was no theft case so I told them to put a stop to the allegations. The deceased who wasn’t pleased with people calling a thief when he wasn’t one, led to the altercations,” he explained.

Kwadwo Boateng went on to reveal that during the heated argument, the accused pulled out a knife and first cut the deceased before fatally stabbing him in the head.

“Believer [the accused] drew a knife in the middle of the fight and initially inflicted a cut on the side of his head. Gye Nyame [deceased] then held a knife. They both fell on the ground following the struggle. Believer had the chance to strike the second time in the head after Gye Nyame fell on him. Gye Nyame went home after the incident refusing to seek medical attention. Due to his deteriorating health, he was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead.”

In a startling revelation, the Assembly Member disclosed that the suspect had a criminal history, having served 9 years in prison for killing his uncle.

"It was discovered after the incident that he had previously been imprisoned for 9-10 years for murdering his uncle after a dispute. Unfortunately, this incident occurred after his release."

The suspect has been arrested and is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
