Life-saving breast cancer awareness campaign reaches over 2,000 in Kasoa

In a bold and compassionate initiative this March, a team of dedicated health professionals launched a breast cancer awareness campaign that provided free screenings to over 2,000 individuals across Kasoa and its surrounding communities.

This initiative, which occurred on the 6th of March, aligned with Ghana's Independence Day celebrations and underscored the critical importance of early detection and treatment of breast cancer—a major health issue in Ghana and around the world.

The team of health professionals was led by Dr. Jemima Silas, who since starting her career in public health has made community well-being the cornerstone of her mission. Having been instrumental in expanding access to healthcare services, particularly for underserved populations. She initially focused on infectious and communicable diseases, however, the scope of her work has grown to include essential cancer prevention services, particularly for those with limited access to care.

This year’s initiative marked a significant expansion of the team’s community outreach efforts. Beyond providing medical services, the approach included comprehensive support, education and empowerment for breast cancer patients and their loved ones.

Dr. Silas, during a community engagement session at the Kasoa Central Market, emphasized, her belief in the uniqueness of each individual's cancer journey drove her to offer tailored support and resources. “I understand that every breast and cervical cancer journey is unique, and I am committed to empowering individuals with the knowledge, support, and training they need to navigate this challenging path with resilience and hope,”

A standout feature of the campaign was the establishment of a 24-hour call center. This innovative addition provided continuous support throughout the month. The helpline enabled individuals to make inquiries, schedule screenings, and obtain critical information at any time, ensuring that no one had to face their cancer journey in isolation. For those who, through the screening were suspected to have breast cancer or other breast diseases, were linked to care with specialized services, ensuring they received the necessary follow-up treatment and support. This holistic approach reflects the team’s dedication to providing comprehensive care throughout the cancer journey.

Educating participants about self-examination techniques for early detection of breast cancer was paramount during the community workshop sessions. Dr. Silas highlighted the alarming rise in breast cancer cases both globally and in Ghana, stressing the importance of preventive measures and early intervention. “Institutions must invest in preventive measures to ensure the health and well-being of our communities,” She stressed, underscoring the importance of early intervention and proactive health management.

Ghana's alarming breast cancer statistics (2,260 cases per 100,000 women and 1% of cases in men) highlight the critical need for such initiatives. Breast cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Ghana and ranks among the top causes globally. By offering free physical breast examinations and ultrasound scans, the team have provided a crucial lifeline to individuals who might otherwise be unable to afford these services.

Through this initiative, a profound impact has been made, saving lives and empowering communities to take charge of their health. The vision is clear: to prioritize community well-being and to bridge the gap in healthcare services.

Inspired by the success of this year’s campaign, there are plans to continue these outreach efforts, with a focus on expanding access to cancer screening and education across other parts of Ghana. The commitment to health equity and innovative approach to community care are paving the way for a healthier future for all.
