Limited Registration: Ghanaians are ‘hypocrites’ – Asiedu Nketia

The General Secretary of the largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia popularly called General Mosquito has described a section of Ghanaians as hypocrites for lambasting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in its quest to ensure that the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jane Mensa and her team go by the laws regarding electoral processes.

According to him, the EC boss who has decided not to heed to the laws is not insulted but rather the leadership of the NDC and its Flagbearer John Dramani Mahama are being taken to the cleaners for voicing out an action that will be detrimental to Ghana’s democracy if pursued.

He wondered why the NDC which is a peace loving party fighting for the restoration of democracy should be tagged as an enemy to the EC because they are kicking against venues for the new limited voted registration.

Mr Asiedu Nketia charged Ghanaians to condemn the actions of the EC to prove their true national identity.

‘Sometimes I feel very sad because of such allegations that we have launched a campaign against the EC, Ghanaians are hypocrites, those who want to abide by the laws are regarded stubborn, I’m surprised that those who want democracy to be restored are tagged as not peace loving people, I don’t understand, but those who wants to flout laws are seen as good people. EC is not independent of the law, so if they want to flout laws, citizens must ensure that the EC obeys laws, other than that you are not good citizens, if they want to misconstrue their independence and say they are free to flout the laws of the institution then we are getting outside democracy into something else,’ General Mosquito said in interview with Asempa FM monitored by MynewsGh.com

The EC will carry out limited new voter registration exercise in June at some district offices, but the NDC wants the exercise to be extended to electoral areas arguing that some voters will be disenfranchised if the EC goes ahead with its decision.

Th NDC has however observed that it cannot sit aloof for the EC boss to use her position to flout laws.

General Mosquito fears that the EC boss who says her office is independent of the law can declare anybody a President during the 2020 elections.

‘If she says she won’t go by the laws she’s implying that results from the field will not be declared but she will rather declare her own results. She can use her position to declare a flagbearer as a President when that person has not been voted for by the people,’ he fumed.

He said the NDC will ensure that Ghana’s electoral laws are robust enough.
