Limited Voter Registration: Technical challenges hinder first day of registration

Hundreds of people in the Ashanti Region who thronged to the offices of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) for the voter registration exercise were left stranded due to poor internet connectivity.

Slow network and internet connectivity challenges delayed the start of the Electoral Commission’s Limited Voter Registration exercise in almost all centers across the Ashanti Region.

OTEC News' reporter Jacob Agyenim Boateng, who reported from the Ashanti Regional Office of the EC, said the exercise was scheduled to begin at 7:00 a.m., but delays in connecting the EC's online registration system at the center led to the exercise commencing as late as 12:00 p.m.

Some applicants, including students in uniform, who came to the center in the early hours of Tuesday, May 7, 2024, had to wait for long hours to get registered.

Addressing the media, the Ashanti Regional Director of EC, Benjamin Bannor Bio, apologized to all applicants for the inconvenience caused.

He said the technical team of the EC was working around the clock to get the problem fixed.

He reiterated the EC's commitment to ensuring that all persons due for registration are captured in the voter register before the end of the exercise.

Following the technical challenges, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, visited the regional EC's office to get firsthand information about the problem.

He assured the public of his office's readiness to assist the EC in delivering on its mandate effectively and timely.

He, however, called on all who have not been captured on the voter register to make it a point to get registered.
