The Ashanti regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known in politics as ‘Chairman Wontumi’ , has commended the two major political parties for comporting themselves at the start of the electoral commission’s limited voters registration exercise.

According to Chairman Wontumi, the manner in which the two rival political parties handled issues at the various registration centres in the region demonstrates an end to the vigilante era in the region.

“I have never toured elections and limited voter registration exercise centres without my body guards, but today you see I didn’t came here with any of my boys this means the Vigilante era is over. I have told the police command to arrest any chairman of my party and member who tries to cause trouble at any centre same as our opponents,’’ he warned.

He again commended the electoral commission for a smooth start of the exercise. He expressed worry about system failure in the various registration centers.

“The EC must explain to us why they couldn’t register people through online as we were told. The online registration systematic failure across the region has slowed the entire exercise compelling registrant to queue for hours, this is unacceptable and I think the EC can do better to avoid delay of people in various registration centres,’’ he bemoaned.

Responding to security situation at the various districts in the region, Chairman Wontumi was impressed with the regional Security Council (RESEC) for discharging police personnel to offer security at the registration centres but added they are not adequate for the exercise.

“ I am not much impressed with the number of police personnel at the registration centres the police must release more men to the centres even though I don’t envisage any trouble going forward in the exercise. But it’s important we prepare for any unfortunate development that will distract the exercise,’’ he noted.
