The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah has expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance by traders as the city of Accra locks down to contain and prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

According to him, most residents have responded positively to the directive of the President to stay home noting that compliance level is about 95 per cent.

The mayor said this when he toured parts of the city accompanied by the Municipal Chief Executive of Korle Klottey, Nii Adjei Tawiah and some officials of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to monitor how residents and traders are complying with the directive.

Areas visited include Makola, Agbogloshie, Kwame Nkrumah Circle (Neoplan Station and its immediate environs) and Kaneshie among others.

“As a leader, you must be in town to coordinate activities, it’s fieldwork and not an office job".

Security operatives have been deployed, we have also met the market leaders on a couple of times and done series of announcements so we have to find out how city dwellers are complying with the directives and I can say compliance level is about 95 per cent. We can see that some people are selling food items.

"I can say that most residents have responded positively to the directives of the President to stay home but we are not leaving anything to chance and that is why we are still on the field to ensure compliance,” he added.

He reiterated that the country was fighting a virus and not human beings and appealed to residents to stay home.

The Mayor also announced that the assembly had begun major clean-up of the city and assured that measures would be stepped up to ensure that the city is clean.

“We have started a massive clean-up exercise in the city to demonstrate to Ghanaians that we do the cleaning all the time, ” he said and urged residents, traders and all visitors coming into the city to be responsible when they come into the city after the lockdown.
