Member of Parliament(MP) for Yapei-Kusawgu and a member of the Mines and Energy Committee, John Abdulai Jinapor has stated that the inability of government to pay debts owed the Ghana Grid Company( GRIDco) will soon plunge the country into power outages (Dumsor) during this festive season.
The legislator says that despite the fact that government has received funds from the Energy Sector Levies to be able to pay the energy sector debts, gross mismanagement and lack of foresight has resulted in huge unpaid debts for which staff of GRIDco have embarked on a sit-down strike beginning today.
“Despite huge receivables from the Energy Sector Levies instituted by President John Mahama, the Energy sector debts keeps rising at an alarming rate under this government and can only be attributed to gross mismanagement and lack of foresight by the current government.
This has culminated in the Electricity Company of Ghana recording over 8 billion Cedis losses since 2017,” he revealed in a statement sighted by MyNewsGh.com.
Workers of GRIDco have embarked on the sit-down strike due to millions of unpaid arrears that the government has failed to pay to GRIDco after promises by government to do so.
Mr Jinapor has therefore appealed to the President to ensure that the striking workers call off the strike by addressing their issues
