Lotto Receivers, Agents Demand Reciepts For Taxes Paid

Wa, Aug. 12, - Lotto agents and receivers at Wa have expressed their opposition to paying taxes on their commissions and stakings to lotto proprietors without being given receipts. They pointed out that these proprietors have for the past two weeks been collecting taxes from them without any form of receipt and expressed dissatisfaction at the inability of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to devise a mechanism to monitor the amount collected so far as tax. These concerns were expressed during an open forum organised by Wa district secretariat of the IRS on the new taxes on lotto at Wa today. They said the new tax system can only succeed if its implementation is deferred to allow the IRS to print booklets for use by all lotto operators to avoid under declaration of sales by the proprietors. "The tax system in operation now, has too many loopholes and until an immediate intervention, the general perception among stakers in Wa is that the IRS is assisting the operators to cheat us," said Alhassan Haruna, a receiver. In a reaction, Mr G.K. Adeyiga, Upper West regional inspector of taxes said the tax was an indirect one and like other consumer taxes, are never covered by receipts. He said tax clearance certificates would however be issued when requested for, adding that all the necessary inputs are in place for the implementation of the new lotto tax which became effective from August one. He appealed to all those who have a stake in the lotto business and had the welfare of the nation at heart, to report all cases of cheating and those operating underground for the necessary sanctions to be applied.
