Low patronage at exhibition centres for voters register

Accra, Aug. 10, GNA - Turn-out at exhibition centres for the voters register at polling stations on the third day has not been encouraging.

A tour by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to some centres revealed that most of the eligible voters were not aware of the exercise.

At the Arts Centre polling station, Mr Samuel Nii Tettey, Exhibition Officer complained of low patronage, and said only 16 registered voters reported to check on their information in the register on Monday while only seven registered voters turned out on Tuesday.

He said since the exercise began on Sunday, only 23 registered voters had turned out to check out their names in the register.

However, Mr Tettey said one of them had a poor picture on his identification card, which made it difficult to identify him, but was hopeful the problem would be resolved.

He urged registered voters to take the exercise serious and visit the centres to check their names in the register to correct all anomalies for easy voting.

Mr Tettey, however, anticipated a high turn-out before the end of the exercise.

Mr Kwaku Obeng, another exhibition officer, said participation of registered voters had been low because of poor publicity and education on the exercise, which is expected to eliminate all errors in the register.

These include wrong spelling of names, photographs, ages, sexes and removal of names of any deceased relative or any person not qualified to vote.

Mr Evans Kluvi, exhibition officer, at NCR Electoral Centre at Osu Klottey Constituency expressed concern about how people had neglected the exercise.

He said only 31 registered voters had checked on their names by Monday and on Tuesday mid-morning only 15 people had patronised the exercise.

Mr Kluvi said there had not been any challenges since the beginning of the exercise.

"Most registered voters are not aware of the exercises therefore, the Electoral Commission (EC) should use mobile vans to educate them on the exercise," he added.

The concerns were the same at other exhibition centres such as the Roxy Cinema hall, Accra Metropolitan Education centre and Accra Polytechnic all within Osu Klottey Constituency.

Some registered voters complained of missing identity cards and were directed to the EC Offices to seek redress, others sought for advice on what the exhibition was about.
