Accra, April 13, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor on Tuesday decorated the visiting Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva with Ghana's highest state honour, Companion of the Order to the Star of Ghana.
He decorated President Da Silva with a sash and presented him with the citation at a State Banquet held in his honour in Accra. The citation read by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Minister of Foreign Affairs said: "you are an outstanding democrat and firm advocate of human rights. You have shown tremendous zeal in administering your country.
"Your commitment to addressing the concerns of the poor and the marginalized in society through programmes deemed at eradicating hunger, the provision of family grants and school cheques have won you national and international acclaim."
It said: "Your government has since its inception forged closer cooperation with African countries, as a consequence of this development, Ghana-Brazil relations have also been strengthened further."
"The impetus provided by your government has led to the reactivation of the Ghana-Brazil Permanent Joint Commission of Cooperation, which held its second session in August 2004 in Brasilia and adopted important decisions on political, economic and cultural cooperation between our two countries".
The citation said: "In recognition of your exemplary leadership of Brazil, the commendable foreign policy conducted by your government towards Africa, your determination and dedication to strengthen and deepen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the governments and peoples of Ghana and Brazil, Ghana hereby confers on you her highest honour, the State Honour of the Companion of the Order to the Star of Ghana."
President Da Silva reciprocated the gesture by decorating President Kufuor with the Brazilian highest State of Honour. He decorated President Kufuor with a sash for the Highest State Honour of the Federative Republic of Brazil, the South Cross Order. A citation that accompanied the honour said: "You are being honoured for your sterling leadership qualities on the African Continent."
