M.P, Assembly assist heart patient with 5,000 euros

The honorable member of parliament for Obuasi Hon. Edward Michael Ennin has presented a cheque for ?10million to assist the cardiothoracic unit of the Korle-bu Teaching hospital to conduct an open-heart surgery on one Miss Dela Serghim.

The patient 17 years of age is a student of the Christ the King Senior Secondary school in Obuasi and has been diagnosed of having a defect in the mitral valve of the heart leading to chronic heart failure.

According to authorities of the Korle-bu teaching hospital, Miss Dela Serghim was referred to the centre from Komfo Anokye teaching hospital in Kumasi with complaints of difficulty in breathing and easy tiredness.

After clinical evaluations and investigation, the cost of hospitalization and surgery was put at ten thousand euros (? 10,000.00) or the cedi equivalent.

The Ghana heart foundation said it shall assist by paying 50% of this amount, whiles the guardians of the patients will be expected to raise the rest.

Receiving the cheque of ?10million from the M.P., mother of the patient Madam Comfort Duku said she's so far raised only ?60,000,000 and was still exploiting other avenues of getting funds to supplement the amount. She expressed gratitude to the M.P and the municipal chief executive in particular for the gesture but additional funds are needed to purchase certain drugs for the daughter?s upkeep. She has therefore appealed to the assembly, N.G.O.'s , religions institutions, philanthropic organizations and other individuals to assist her raise the 5,000 euros or its cedi equivalent. The M.P told newsmen during the presentation that he felt touched by the plight of the poor girl and therefore resolved to assist her with his share of the common fund.
