MCE calls for promotion of sanitation and protection of environment

Accra, Aug 19, GNA- Mr. Ebenezer Adjei Osekre, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal Assembly, has urged individuals and organizations to assist government's efforts in promoting sanitation and protecting the environment from degradation.

He said the assembly was determined to revive the Teshie Compost Plant so that it could be used to convert refuse into usable and friendly black soil products.

Mr Osekre was speaking at the launch of a clean-up campaign dubbed "Clean-up the World 2008 weekend Campaign", by Town and Country Sanitation, a non-governmental organisation, (NGO), in Accra on Tuesday. The campaign seeks to bring together businesses, associations, schools, government agencies and individuals in a range of activities and programs aimed at improving the environment to promote sanitation. Mr Osekre appealed to individuals and industries to help reduce carbon emissions by vehicles fumes, chimneys and gas said "Community action is needed to ensure a sustainable use of the environment".

Mr. Nii Amon Kotei, former member for South Ayawaso Municipal Assembly, called for a uniform, practicable, clear-cut sanitation policy in the country.

He said urged assemblies to enforce bye-laws on sanitation management and called on the media to intensify the campaign for a clean environment.

Miss Linda Annan, National Coordinator of the NGO, said the campaign sought to sensitise the public on good sanitation practices and to supply sanitation inputs to communities, schools and health institutions.
