MCE marks first 100 days in office

Cape Coast, Mar. 2, GNA - The Cape Coast Municipal Assembly is to establish an Entrepreneurs Village for artisans and to support rural and cottage industry.

Mr George Percy Ashun, Municipal Chief Executive, said this at a public forum in Cape Coast on Wednesday, to mark his first 100 days in office. He said skilled disabled persons and those interested in learning vocations would be assisted by the Assembly in conjunction with the local Association for the Handicapped, under the poverty reduction programme.

Mr. Ashun said the Assembly would spend 245,808,628.00 cedis out of its first and second quarter allocation of 1,500,000,000 cedis of the common fund on development by June.

It would also use 133,934,128.00 cedis on poverty reduction programmes, 75,172,500.00 cedis to improve rural housing and 36,702,000.00 cedis on community infrastructure.

Mr Ashun said efforts would be intensified to improve agriculture, afforestation and social welfare with the assistance of decentralised government departments. He expressed concern about the rapid succession of Chief Executives and said "for the 15 years of the district assembly process, Cape Coast has had as many seven Chief Executives, making an average of one Chief Executive every two-years".

"For whatever good reasons that one can ascertain for these frequent changes, its effect on the development of the Municipality has been very obvious as no one particular chief executive has had enough time to implement development programmes," he said.
