Member of Parliament (MP) for Kumbungu in the Northern Region, Ras Mubarak, has urged Ghana’s Parliament to call on the Police administration to probe into a case which led to the shooting of a 19 year old student.
Narrating the incident on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday 24th January, 2017, the MP indicated that the victim, Ganiu Abdul Rahman, a constituent was returning home from class when he was hit in the leg by a stray bullet last month.
He pointed out that the shot was discovered to have been fired by the police at the victim’s community in Dalun, during a standoff between the police and some youth.
The MP revealed that, the victim is receiving treating at the Tamale West Hospital where he (MP) has visited him to see the extent of his injury and commiserate with his family.
Calling for a revulsion of the frequent use of live ammunition by the police during riot control, Mr. Mubarak, said such brutal use of force have in other cases resulted not just in severe injuries but loss of lives.
He therefore sought the help of Parliament to demand from the police a public findings of their inquiry into the matter, take up the medical bills and provide adequate compensation to the victim.
The Kumbungu MP also want the police to put in place stringent measure to ensure that incidents like that do not reoccur.
