Pusiga (U/E), May 28, GNA - Five water pumping equipment worth over 30 million cedis have presented to some farming groups in Pusiga, near Bawku, to assist them to engage in dry season farming. Mr. Simon Akunye, Member of Parliament (MP) for Pusiga/Pulmakom, presented the items at a mini-durbar at Pusiga on Sunday as part of efforts aimed at addressing the inadequacy of irrigational facilities in the area.
He said the non-availability of irrigational facilities has contributed to majority of the youth to migrate south to search for non-existence jobs or engage in menial jobs during the dry season. Mr. Akunye said during this period the youth were exposed to vices and other dehumanizing conditions that had adverse effects on their social development.
"The females indulge in prostitution whiles their males counterparts engage in armed robbery and drugs abuse," he said. He expressed the hope that with the supply of the equipment, the youth will stay at home and engage in meaningful farming activities to reduce poverty.
The MP took advantage of the durbar to enumerate some of the projects undertaken by him since his election in 2004. Prominent among them were the cladding of four primary schools, provision of solar lights to five JSS, supply of 58 electric poles, roofing sheets and other materials for six community schools. Other were the repairing of 49 broken down boreholes, six hand-dug wells and the rehabilitation and extension of the maternity ward of the Pusiga Health Centre, all with his share of the Common Fund. Mr. Sali Ndego thanked the MP for his assistance.
