MP raises concern about armed robbery cases

Accra, Nov. 4, GNA - Mr Edward Doe Adjaho, the Deputy Minority Leader, on Friday expressed concern about the increasing armed robbery cases in the country and asked that the Interior Minister be summoned before Parliament to tell the House measures put in place to deal with the situation.

The Deputy Minority Leader, who caught the eye of the Speaker after the commencement of Public Business, said it was the duty of the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Mr Felix Owusu-Adjapong to invite the Interior Minister to answer question on the increasing cases of armed robbery in the country.

Alhaji Malik Yakubu, Second Deputy Speaker, who presided over Friday's sitting, however, said the decision should not be left to the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs but the leadership from both sides of the House should meet and decided on how to initiate discussions on the matter before the House.

Later in an interview, Mr Adjaho said it appeared the Police had lost control over the armed robbery situation in the country. He said the alarming spate of robbery cases had become a matter of national concern but the government was silent over the matter. He said it was, therefore, necessary that the Sector Minster in charge of internal security appeared before the House to comment on the situation.

Earlier, various papers were laid before the House, including the Annual Report and Audited Financial Statements of the Export Development and Investment Fund for the year, 2004 and the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict (New York, 25 May, 2005).
