The Motor Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service has launched a major offensive against road traffic offenders with the arrest of about 40 drivers, including two Members of Parliament (MPs), for jumping red lights.
Messrs Mahama Ayariga of Bawku West and Effah-Baafi of Kintampo South were among the drivers who were arrested last Monday for breaking various road traffic regulations.
Mr. Ayariga pleaded not guilty when he appeared before the City Engineers Court on Thursday, while Mr. Effah-Baafi failed to show up in court.
A source at the MTTU told the Graphic that Mr. Ayariga would re-appear before the court on August 18, 2005, and the police expressed the hope that Mr. Effah-Baafi would also appear before the court on the same date.
The source said Mr. Ayariga was driving a Mercedes Benz with registration number GT1154 W, while Mr. Effah ?Baafi drove a Nissan Terano with registration number GT5173T.
It said they drove through the red light on the Airport Road on Monday.
The source said the other offenders, who pleaded guilty, were fined various amounts ranging from 600 thousand cedis to three point two million cedis.
