MPs Setting Bad Example: Speaker Is Mad

Thu, 23 Jan 2003 Source: .

The Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Peter Ala Adjetey has once again bemoaned poor attendance in the House after Thursday’s sittings were called off because only 42 members of the 200-member house were present.

Mr. Ala Adjetey said the attitude of the Parliamentarians could undermine the growing campaign against indiscipline. He said parliamentarians, as representatives of the people must be seen to be doing the right thing.

The house sat for just twenty minutes and Mr. Ala Adjetey did not hide his disappointment.

He said "it is disheartening and discouraging that members cannot set good example and create a good image of the house", adding that "I do not see why members cannot wake up around 4.30 am to be punctual and on time to attend the day's sittings as other workers do".

Parliament has been constantly bogged with absentee MPs, which has often drawn strong condemnation from the public.
