MPs’ Survey: Most NPP seats borrowed; we’re taking back 2020 – Asiedu Nketiah

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress(NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketiah says the NDC party will annex most of its seats that were snatched from them by the ruling NPP come 2020 general elections.

According to him, most of the NPP MPs have realised that they risk losing those seats they occupy now, hence will not strive to work hard to maintain them.

“The first time NPP MPs themselves are sensing danger. Most of them stood as Parliamentary candidates not purposely for them to become Parliamentarians, but they knew when they pull their weight a little bit they could be appointed by their party as DCE should they win power. They are even taken aback the manner an overwhelming number of them won the seats they contested for. They were indeed not prepared for parliament, nonetheless, they’ve realised that those seats are borrowed seats and the NDC will take them back in 2020.” he told Kasapa 102.5 Fm Tuesday.

His comment comes on the back of the recent research conducted by the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana claiming 50% of MPs risk losing their seats.

The report revealed that 49.5% of Ghanaians surveyed said they will not vote for their incumbent Member of Parliament citing poor performance and a lack of representation.

Majority of the respondents representing 46.7% also do not want their incumbent MPs to contest in 2020 general elections.

42.4% according to the research want their MPs to contest while 10.9% are undecided on whether their MPs should contest or not.

Speaking on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 Fm, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah said no wonder the report is casting doom for half of the incumbent MPs, on the back of the non-impressive performance of most Parliamentarians, because NPP MPs are conserving resources to scale up their performance in election period rather than wasting it now.

This according to him explains for the reason why there is a seeming widespread apathy among NPP MPs working hard in their constituencies.

“They are conserving the resources they have now so it could be used on the eve of elections.” Mr Asiedu Nketiah told host Kweku Owusu Adjei.
