Speaker of Parliament Professor Mike Oquaye has said Ghana’s Parliament will soon introduce a new policy which prevents legislators from serving on multiple committees.
Professor Oquaye said the House is currently considering restricting each Member of Parliament to only one committee in the legislature in sync with the best practices of advanced democracies.
Addressing some selected journalists in Accra, Professor Oquaye said: “If you go to Britain, [it is] one member [of parliament] to one committee [of parliament]. Here, we have people on three, four committees and then you become a jack of all trades”.
He said both sides of the House “have agreed that this is not good enough and it doesn’t help us in doing our job well”.
Professor Oquaye said in the new Standing Orders, an MP is supposed to be a member of “only one committee and be specialized”.
