Kumasi, May 13, GNA - The Ashanti Regional Branch of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested 78 drivers who flouted the nation-wide directive to drivers to remove their tinted glasses some weeks ago.
The Acting Regional Commander of the MTTU, ASP Abraham Bansah, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview, in Kumasi, that the arrests, made during separate operations in the Kumasi Metropolis, are to reduce criminal activities, perpetrated in vehicles with tinted glasses. He said on April 20 this year, 58 drivers were arrested at different locations in the metropolis and out of that number, 42 were sent to court while the remaining 16 were issued with warning letters remove the tinted spots on their windows.
On Monday, May 4, 2009, the MTTU again arrested 20 drivers for failing to comply with the order.
He said that they were all taken to court and fined between GH¢300 and GH¢400 based on the degree of the tint in the glass. ASP Bansah, however, noted that only a few drivers were complying with the order and, therefore, warned offenders to fully comply before they were arrested because they would not be spared when caught. 13 May 09
