Accra, May 9, GNA - The Executive of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) on Tuesday gave a two-day ultimatum to the Old Musicians Union of Ghana (GOMOWA) to retract allegations of embezzlement levelled against them.
At a press conference in Accra, MUSIGA executives said the issues raised at the conference have no substance and if GOMOWA fails to retract the allegations, they will advise themselves.
MUSIGA alleged that members of GOMOWA are not old Musicians as they claim. "MUSIGA knows musicians who are retired and who qualify to be called old musicians."
It asked GOMOWA to be mindful of the legal consequences of their activities. They reiterated that MUSIGA, as an organisation, is aware of its responsibility to musicians and will therefore not be drawn into unnecessary rumbles.
The executives of MUSIGA assured musicians that their onslaught on the Oversight Committee of COSGA is on course and the union will not rest on its oars until they bring them to book.
"MUSIGA members are ready and willing to seek redress in the appropriate forum for any libellous information carried about them. "Although the 1992 constitution guarantees freedom of association, MUSIGA will not stand by for some self-styled old musicians to be used by unscrupulous persons to achieve their selfish ends."
They announced that pension and insurance programmes are in the pipeline for both active and veteran musicians, and will ensure that the rights of musicians are not toyed with.
"Musicians dying as paupers must be a thing of the past. No amount of false publication nor character assassination will deter us from this noble cause."
