Obuasi, Oct. 25, GNA - Mr Peter Mac-Manu, Western Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who is seeking the position of the National Chairman, on Monday said was capable to lead the NPP to consolidate its power in 2008 and increase the party's Parliamentary seats.

He said even though the incumbent National Chairman did well to win the 2004 elections and should be commended, the 2008 elections posed greater challenges to the party, which called for leadership that had the ability to work under pressure.

Mr Mac-Manu was interacting with party delegates drawn from Obuasi, Akrofuom, New Edubiase, Asokwa, Fomena and Odotobri at Obuasi to canvass for votes during the forthcoming National congress of the party.

"Mac-Manu has the experience and tested skills in many fields including, setting political agenda and the understanding of coalition building which is a tool for modern day politics and election victories," he said.

The aspiring National Chairman said there was the need for the party to get vibrant leaders who would be able "to fertilise the grounds" before the flagbearer was elected between now and 2007. That is why I am seeking your mandate to fertilise the grounds."

Mr Mac-Manu pointed out that the 2008 elections was a different ball game, which would be played on a different terrain since the magic of President John Agyekum Kufuor would not be there for the party.

"This means that we have to gird our loins and energise the structures at the constituency and polling station levels because the situation at the constituency and polling station levels now is not the best."

Mr Mac-Manu, who had served the NPP in various capacities including being a member of the national campaign committee for 2004, said he had successfully led the party to increase the Parliamentary seat in the Western region from three in 1996 to the current 12 and also forged a local alliance with the CPP to win two seats at the Ellembelle and Evalue-Gwira constituencies.

He said there was the need to strengthen the Women's wing of the party to make it more active and vibrant.

The aspiring National Chairman, urged the delegates to vote for him and advised the NPP family to remain focused to help the party to be strong.

Mr John Boadu, National Youth Treasurer, who is seeking for the position of National Youth Organizer, also addressed the delegates.
