Accra, May 23, GNA - The Chiefs and Elders of Madina-Zongo have appealed to the Government to construct, as a matter of urgency, a bigger gutter that would drain water from the area. They said the present gutter was too small leading to periodic flooding of their homes.

The Chiefs and Elders made their concerns known at a meeting with the Member of Parliament for the Madina-Abokobi Constituency, Aljai Amadu B. Sorogo at the Umar Bun Khatab Primary School in Madina-Zongo on Sunday.

They discussed the sanitation and drainage system in the area, the construction of a clinic and a toilet and the provision of potable water in community.

The Chiefs and Elders mentioned the non-availability of waste disposal containers; the need to tar an access road that led to Madina-Zongo; the extension of electricity to the only school in the area and discussed the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Alhaji Sorogo pledged to get the Madina Urban Council to put waste disposal containers at vantage points in area.

He also promised to adopt the only primary school in Madina Zongo and said with the assistance of Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), he would make sure that the compound was walled and electricity provided in the classrooms to facilitate the holding of adult literacy classes at night.

Alhaji Sorogo called on the parents to invest in the education of their children so that one-day some of them would be in Parliament to help with the development of the area.

The MP said he would be establishing an endowment fund to assist students, who might want to have vocational and technical education. On the prevalence of HIV/AIDS, the MP called on the youth of Madina-Zongo to refrain from indulging in casual sex. He announced that he had been made the Deputy Shadow Minister of Mines and Energy and, therefore, promised to help Madina-Zongo with one transformer to reduce the frequent power outage experienced in the area. He took advantage of the occasion to thank the people for their prayers and support during Election 2004, which he won to become the MP for the Madina-Abokobi Constituency area.

Those who attended the meeting included the Assemblyman for Madina-Zong, Mr Mahmud Dantani; the Local Chief Imam, Mallam Yunus and local National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chief Patron, Alhaji Seidu. 23 May 05
