The call for free distribution of pads to women and students is growing stronger, with Member of Parliament for the Madina Constituency, Francis-Xavier Sosu, joining the campaign.

Sosu believes that in addition to pushing for the government to eliminate taxes on sanitary pads, providing free distribution is crucial to ensuring accessibility and affordability for women.

"We are advocating for the removal of taxes on pads. Even if all taxes are eliminated, some people may still find pads expensive and unaffordable. As a Member of Parliament, I understand that financial struggles can affect anyone. It is essential for our nation to work towards providing free pads for everyone, so that women can easily access them in times of need," Sosu explained.

"This initiative will improve public health by reducing the risks and health issues related to poor menstrual hygiene practices. I strongly believe that free pads should be available to all, especially female students in secondary and primary schools nationwide," he added.

Francis-Xavier Sosu lamented the cancellation of the free distribution of pads, which began during the NDC regime, due to rumours that the used pads were being collected for rituals.

He advised that matters relating to menstruation should not be politicized but instead be considered critical matters requiring urgent attention.

The MP made these remarks at an event held at PRESEC to mark the celebration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, which is celebrated every year on May 28.

This year's theme was "Together for a Period-Friendly World."
