Former President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Liberia for Tuesday’s presidential run-off between Vice President Joseph Boakai and former football star George Oppon Weah.

Ghana’s former leader is leading the Observer Mission Group of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

He was at the first round of polls held on 10 October.

On Monday, he held a briefing session with the 25-man group.

“The briefing included a presentation by the ECOWAS Technical Support Team that was deployed to assist the Liberian National Election Commission evaluate their voter register and technical capacity.”

The Technical Support Team was headed by former Electoral Commissioner of Ghana Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan.

A statement from Mr Mahama’s office on Monday said he has held separate meetings with Vice President Boakai, who leads the Unity Party, and Mr Weah, who leads the Coalition of Democratic Change.

Ghana’s ex-president reminded Liberians that the sanctity of the polls, and the stability of the country after the elections, will depend on them and not ECOWAS, the Observers or the UN.

Mr Weah beat 19 other candidates to win the first round but could not get a constitutional 50 per cent plus one vote.
