Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has blamed the lack of rainfall across the country on the poor governance of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Even though the government has announced measures to mitigate the effects of the dry spell, the former president expressed sympathy for farmers dealing with losses noting that the situation has also led to an increase in food prices.

Former President John Mahama made these comments at the Babatokuma Market in Kintampo North during his four-day campaign tour of the Bono East Region where he engaged with traders.

“We know that when you’re running a country, the most important thing is that the people can afford food. Today, food is very expensive. The rains have not been coming this year because of the NPP government which has damaged many of our crops.

“This is why the next NDC government will introduce the Farmers Service Sector in each district and give them ten tractors each,” Mr. Mahama pledged.

The government has been taking steps to mitigate the effects of a looming food crisis. Last week, the Ministry of Agriculture announced an export ban on some food products including maize, soybean, and other grains.
