President John Mahama has ordered for the immediate dissolution of the Wa Polytechnic Council following protracted internal wrangling at the Institute.

According to Mahama, the decision was based on the advice of the National Council on Tertiary Education. An interim Council will manage the polytechnic.

“I have taken notice of the current crisis that has overwhelmed the Wa Polytechnic which has led to an almost total paralysis of governance in that institution,” Mahama said at the Sunyani Polytechnic where he inaugurated a new Hospitality Catering and Integrated Management facility as the Polytechnic becomes Technical University next Academic year.

“For two years or more, graduating students have not received their certificate… all are engaged in a free for all litigation that threatens the survival of that institution… I have instructed that an interim management committee takes over the day-to-day management of that institution.”

The President has on his ‘Accounting to the People’ tour of the regions been inaugurating facilities in the various Polytechnic's as a prelude to the conversion of the Polytechnic's into technical universities in September this year.

The facilities are aimed at equipping the students with skills for the labour market.

President Mahama said government will fast track the upgrade of facilities in the Polytechnics that are yet to meet the conversion criteria.

The Wa polytechnic is one of the few yet to meet the criteria due to some internal problems making a number of ongoing projects in the school to be put on hold.
