The Minority Leader of Parliament, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has admitted that President John Mahama has indeed achieved something worthwhile within the latter's three years in office to add up to the existing projects former President Mills and Kufuor left behind.
According to him, there are evidential projects going on in the country to show for his achievement in the country but, however, there is something wrong with the costs involved in all the projects carried out in the country.
Commenting on the achievement book of President Mahama which highlights some of the things implemented under his tenure, the NPP leader in Parliament mentioned the President has done well by providing water, road constructions, building schools and hospitals.
Inasmuch as the things are visible in the country, Hon. Osei Kyei Bonsu on Okay Fm’s Ade Akye Abia Morning Show averred the constant critics of the Mahama-led government are in the area of the expenditure.
He, however, intimated that the cost of the projects are outrageously expensive; deceiving and cheating Ghanaians with the mindset that they will not demand accountability once the projects are completed.
The Minority leader named corruption to be the cause of the high cost of road construction as government deliberately refuses to pay contractors, knowing well that after 90 days the contractors are allowed to add the bank rate of 36 percent on the $1.5 to $1.6 million.
He estimated that the delay in paying contractors compelled the country to pay some $3 million dollars while such money could have been used to construct more roads in the country.
He hinted that President Kufuor between 2005 and 2008 was able to use $1.2 billion dollars loan to construct 4,440 kilometers, but President Mahama has gone for $1.9 billion loan from 2009 to 2014 to construct 740 kilometers.
“This is why we are saying there is too much corruption, and people are stealing from the state in the Mahama administration, but he is not addressing this issue. Nobody is saying he is not constructing roads but at what cost? He seems to think that the end justifies the means and nobody will complain once the projects are visible,” he stated.
