Mahama must cease from meddling in labour issues – UTAG

The immediate-past President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Dr. Samuel Asiedu, says president John Mahama must “immediately desist” from the practice of meeting members of labour associations to get their concerns addressed.

According to Dr. Asiedu, engaging aggrieved labour unions will result in the President getting distracted from performing his duties.

President Mahama over the weekend intervened in the indefinite industrial action by teacher unions, resulting in the leadership to yield to his plea for them to suspend the strike, while their concerns were being addressed by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the Ghana Education Service.

Some people have criticised the President for cleaning the mess created by institutions mandated to handle labour issues.

Speaking Thursday on Badwam on Adom TV on the Multi TV channel, Dr. Asiedu said President Mahama must allow those institutions to do their work.

The former UTAG President further accused the Ministry of Education and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) of not effectively performing their duties thereby causing a lot of labour agitations.

Members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) are threatening to indefinitely withdraw their services in all public universities next Tuesday, April 2.

The action they say is to back demands for immediate payment of all salary arrears owed its members since 2012.
