A group calling itself Patriotic Action For National Interest (PANI) says President John Mahama must immediately sack the Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
Kofi Portuphy is concurrently Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress.
His critics say he cannot hold both positions at the same time. According to them, being head of NADMO is a full-time job which requires full commitment.
PANI, therefore, says Kofi Portuphy must recognise the need to resign from that position and concentrate on his new job as Chairman of the NDC.
“It is our contention that he cannot be the chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and remain at post at NADMO.
“We all witnessed how he used state funds to induce NDC delegates to vote for him during their internal contest. Dr Kwabena Adjei, who was seeking re-election, said the NDC’s election was characterised by “exploitation and monetisation”.
"We believe that the manner in which Kofi Portuphy run his NDC Chairmanship campaign is only a harbinger of what he will do in the run-up to the 2016 general election,” the group said in its statement.
The statement noted that: “Again, it is constitutionally wrong and illegality for the NDC Chairman to continue as NADMO boss. It is a simple fact that the work of a NADMO boss is a full-time job and so why is he still in office, juggling it with his national chairmanship post.”
“How can President John Dramani Mahama sit down shamefully and supervise such an act of gross disrespect to the supreme law of the Republic. Are we the citizenry just looking on as they do whatever they want in this country?
“Mr President, we task you to uphold the national Constitution in high esteem. We want to remind you of your duty to do the do, by sacking the NADMO boss; for you cannot continue to disrespect the supreme law of the land,” PANI said.
