The newly elected flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC) Dr Edward Mahama must help shape up the political discourse in Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo has advised.

In a statement to congratulate the Gynaecologist for winning the PNC flagbearership race over the weekend, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer said the personality attacks in Ghana’s politics must stop.

“I congratulate Dr. Edward Nasigre Mahama on his election, yet again, as presidential candidate of the People’s National Convention for the 2016 elections. I also congratulate the new National Officers of the party who were elected at the same National Congress of Saturday, December 12, 2015,” Akufo-Addo said.

He added: “It is my hope that Dr. Edward Mahama and the new crop of National Officers will bring their wealth of experience to bear in steering the affairs of the PNC, and, also, help in shaping the political discourse, from one of personality attacks to a competition of policies and ideas, ahead of next year’s election. This will help to reinforce the peace and stability of our nation.”

Mahama, who led the party in the 1996 elections through to the 2008 polls before being succeeded by Hassan Ayariga in the 2012 elections, polled 492 votes as against Ayariga’s 426 votes.

This will be his fifth attempt at the presidential seat of Ghana.
