Mahama quizzed for not honouring Anas and Amidu

NPP’s Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has quizzed why the President, John Dramani Mahama, failed to confer national awards on former Attorney-General, Martin Amidu and award-winning investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

He insisted that the president's act clearly shows he is not ready to fight corruption despite several assurances that his government is committed to curbing the canker.

“By the way, if the President was keen to fight corruption, why did he overlook Martin Amidu and Anas in the awards that he conferred on certain individuals just a few days ago?”

The minority leader queried when addressing party delegates at the 15th national delegates’ conference in Sunyani on Saturday.

President Mahama, days back, conferred a total of 33 National Awards on 28 Ghanaians and five foreigners for their distinguished services in various disciplines of national development.

Out of the number, 15 personalities were honoured with "Companion of the Order of the Volta", five decorated with "Officer of the Order of the Volta", and 10 people with "Member of the Order of the Volta."

Two were honoured with Grand Medal while one person was honoured posthumously.

Mr. Mensah Bonsu expressed his appreciation to pressure groups, OccupyGhana, Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA), Alliance For Accountable Government (AFAG) as well as policy think tank, IMANI Ghana and Civil Society Organizations including the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) for “joining Parliament’s Minority caucus to fight for transparency and accountability in our governance.”
