Mahama’s death: No excuses from prosecutors - Haruna warns

The Minority in Parliament has served notice it would not entertain excuses from prosecutors over claims of want of evidence against persons arrested for their roles in the death of Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama.

Describing the action as mob injustice, Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu warned that excuses that prosecutors arrested the wrong persons and therefore cannot go ahead with the prosecution would not be tolerated by Ghanaians who are still grieving over his gruesome murder.

“The dastardly murder of a fine soldier at Denkyira-Boase must be condemned. We demand nothing but justice from the political leadership of this country. We demand justice is done decisively, swiftly and decisively.

I hope and pray that the police do not come to tell us they arrested the wrong persons and do not have evidence to continue with the prosecution in order that we can give assurance to Ghanaians. If this can happen to a serving military officer, the facts must be unraveled and the culprits punished to cement a good civil-military relationship”

While insisting that no one should be left off the hook especially those culpable, he said it remains a test case for the country’s security to consolidate its gains.

Background

The late Captain Mahama was a military officer with the 5th Infantry Batallion (5BN) at Burma Camp in Accra but on detachment duties at the Denkyira Obuasi of the Central region.

Captain Mahama, according to his subordinates, was seen jogging along the main road and as he stopped by to ask some women for directions, the women saw a pistol on him.

The women who were alarmed by the discovery of the pistol on Captain Mahama mistook him for an armed robber thereby alerting their assembly member who allegedly organised some men to lynch him and even burnt him in the process.
