A Political Scientist Kwasi Amakye has rubbished suggestions that President Mahama will benefit from sympathy votes in the December polls due to the death of President Mills.

President Mahama was sworn in as President of Ghana soon after the death of President Mills last Tuesday.

Some political watchers say the opposition parties will have to change their campaign messages for the polls since the primary target and competitor is no more.

Others have also opined that President Mahama who has been confirmed as the leader and flagbearer of the NDC is likely to win the December elections due to sympathy votes.

But speaking to XYZ News Mr. Amakye said inasmuch as incumbency can be an advantage for President Mahama in the December polls it could also be his downfall.

He said the president will find it difficult to insulate himself from the administrative challenges of the late President.

Mr. Amakye also noted that the opposition NPP does not have to necessarily change its campaign message if the message is development oriented.**
