After a vigil at Arakan Officers Mess on Thursday, a state burial service for Major Mahama who was lynched and partly burnt by some youth of Denkyria-Obuasi in the Central Region is being held at the Forecourt of State House in Accra.

Major Mahama, according to preliminary investigations by the police, had gone on his early morning physical training in civilian clothing, jogging through the Diaso Township, when he was mistook for an armed robber after a snail seller spotted a pistol on him while reaching for his pocket to pay for snails he had bought from her.

He was the Commander of a military detachment stationed at Diaso in the Upper Denkyira West District to check the activities of illegal miners.

Some roads in the capital have been shut to motorists and will be opened after the burial service. Affected areas include the Castle Road, from AU Roundabout towards Osu Cemetery Traffic Lights to the State House.

Motorists using the Osu Cemetery road towards the AU Roundabout are being directed through the Accra Sports Stadium to the Ministries through National Theatre to the Central Business District (CBD).

The final funeral rites will be held at Bole (from June 13 -15) and Tumu (from 16-18) in the Northern region.

Major Mahama left behind a wife and two children. He was thirty-one.
