Majority of Ghanaians are in support of the National Cathedral project, Deputy Minister of Information, Pius Hadzide has said.

Speaking on Citi FM/Citi TV news analysis programme, The Big Issue on Saturday, Hadzide said those who oppose the cathedral project are in the minority.

“It is my understanding that the National Cathedral was the president’s idea. Our understanding is that it has the support of a majority of Ghanaians but there are a few who disagree and we are ready to listen to these people,” he added.

He explained that the government is only providing land for the project, but private individuals and institutions will finance it.

The Deputy Minister also clarified that the financiers would pay for the accommodation of the nine judges who will be evicted from the site.

National Cathedral will worsen traffic; build at Afienya – Inusah

Former Lands Minister and Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini who also was on The Big Issue urged the government to relocate the yet-to-be-built cathedral from Accra since to him; it will further worsen vehicular traffic in the capital.

He said the government could consider building the cathedral in Afienya or any of its lands outside Accra.

“If the state wants to build the cathedral there are lands elsewhere. So you are going to build this mighty edifice, immediately you put it up it becomes a growth poll. If you take it to Afienya, there is a state land at Afienya. You don’t build all national artifacts at one place. Look at the modern way of developing countries. You spread it, so it becomes a growth point.”
