The Minister of the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has disclosed that more than 65 percent of Ghanaians who fled to neighbouring Ivory Coast in the wake of the Gbeniyiri conflict have returned home.

In a citinewsroom.com report on September 10, 2025, Muntaka said ongoing peacebuilding measures by the government and traditional authorities are gradually restoring confidence among displaced residents.

“I can tell you today that more than 65 percent of the people have returned home. Our biggest concern, however, remains those still outside the borders. Many are already coming back, but we want to facilitate the process to make it even faster.

Government sets up mediation committee to resolve Gbenyiri conflict

Muntaka assured that the government remains committed to ensuring lasting peace in Gbeniyiri and neighbouring communities, adding that security forces continue to maintain order as mediation efforts progress.

“We are receiving strong cooperation from the chiefs and the youth. We have set ourselves a target: by the end of the month, when the committee completes its work, we should be able to bring almost everyone back home,” he said.

The clashes, which stemmed from a dispute over a parcel of land, claimed six lives on Sunday, August 24, 2025.

Eighteen persons sustained various degrees of injuries, as several others were left critically wounded.

Homes and properties were destroyed, forcing many residents, particularly women and children, to seek refuge in neighbouring towns and across the borders.

The Gbeniyiri conflict, which displaced thousands, has attracted widespread concern from civil society and humanitarian organisations, who continue to call for accelerated interventions to stabilise the area and support affected families.
