Mr. Yaw Boateng Gyan, former National Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), says law enforcement agencies and the various security institutions must be made autonomous to end government and political party manipulations.

In his view, law enforcement institutions must be made autonomous so that government officials cannot manipulate them in the pursuit of their parochial interests.

“I think it’s about time we stop this, if indeed the country is practicing democracy fine, let it be so. But Law enforcement Institutions must be autonomous. Even as we speak, government is still able to manipulate parliament”. He noted

Explaining his claim, Mr. Yaw Boateng stated that in parliament, the government of the day is able to maneuver its way by getting its members to vote in favor certain decisions irrespective of the negative implications of such moves.

“I don’t think this thing is helping the country. There are individual differences… for instance; you can’t force me to agree to something I know would not help”. He categorically stated.

The Former Organizer lamented; “this practice on the side of politicians will not help the future in any way. One day we shall be held liable and I bet you there is no way we are can explain our mistakes to the next generation”.

He also stressed that the president has been given too much power per the constitution leading to him solely deciding on appointments.

“If the president has to appoint the IGP, Commander of the Armed Forces, Chief of Defense Staff, what is the assurance that, president will not one day pick a phone and call the IGP not to effect an arrest or something of the nature?” He quizzed

He however suggested appointment must be done in order of hierarchical or order of seniority to eschew acrimony among senior members of the various security agencies in the country .
