Mama Jane International School at Kasoa in the Central Region in collaboration with the Awutu-Senya East District Assembly have embarked on proper environmental sanitation sensitization and cleanup to improve hygiene at Kasoa.
The exercise, which forms part of the major activities on the school’s calendar, is carried out four times in a term to improve the sanitation condition of the community.
Pupils, teachers, and non-teaching staff of the school who participated in the exercise, weeded bushes, desilted drains, cleared rubbish and went on a procession through some notable routes of the community carrying placards to drive home their messages.
Some of the messages read; “Keep Kasoa Clean,” “Dirty Environment Kills,”, “Recycle Waste Products,” “Be mindful of where you keep your waste,” among others.
Mr John Mensah, the Headmaster of the School, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said the school together with the Environmental Health Department of the Assembly sees it as their role to educate residents on proper management and disposal of waste.
He said filth remains a major challenge to society and urged schools in the country to emulate the gesture of his school to engage community members to undertake environmental sanitation activities.
Mr Thomas Akpofu, the Municipal Environmental Health Officer, advised the residents to clean their surroundings and to actively participate in the monthly national sanitation exercise to rid the area of filth.
He called on the citizenry to register with refuse collection service providers to acquire household litter bins while disposing of rubbish at designated places to curtail the incidence of environmental pollution.
