Mamfe Area Council steps up COVID-19 sensitization

The Municipal Chief Executive for the Akuapem-North Municipal Assembly, Dennis Edward Aboagye on Wednesday 29th April, 2020 spear-headed the Assembly Members of Mamfe Area Council and some Health personnel to educate Taxi Drivers and a group of hawkers who trade at the Mamfe taxi rank on the covid-19 pandemic.

The purpose of the programme was to inform the people of the closeness of the virus to them as three (3) persons in the district have been confirmed positive of the virus.

The education at Mamfe therefore became necessary as the community lies between Amanokrom and Akropong where the infected persons lived. In addition, Mamfe strategically serves as a transit point for vehicles and passengers who ply various cities including Koforidua, Kumasi and beyond.

In his submission, the MCE lauded the people of the Area Council, especially Mr. Eric Asare Opare and Mr. Samuel Amoah Opare who are Assembly Members of the town for their support for efforts aimed at combating the virus.

Mr. Dennis Edward Aboagye urged other Assembly Members and opinion leaders to emulate the shining example of the two to compliment the efforts government is putting in place to curb the pandemic.

The Assembly Chief called on the people not to take the outbreak lightly especially as the municipality has recently confirmed three cases.

He advised members of the public who notice any of the symptoms not to hesitate to draw the attention of health personnel for prompt attention.

Mr. Aboagye appealed to the people to desist from stigmatizing people with confirmed cases or those suspected of having the virus as everyone was at risk and could be infected at any time.

Stressing that “these are hard times,” the MCE called on all and sundry to liken the situation to that of a war since the country is combatting a common enemy (covid-19).

He advised the public to make wearing of face mask, washing of hands and social distance protocols a habit, adding that the pandemic could be curtailed if they adhered to the directives given.

The Assembly Chief made a clarion call to the people to rally behind the government to fight the disease rather than making political gains out of it.

Mr. Aboagye recalled the measures His Excellency the President has put in place in his recent broadcast to the nation to make life worth living for every countryman and said these were made for people to stay at home if they do not have any business in town.

The interventions including the absorption of water and part of electricity bills to cushion customers’ April, May and June bills by government, is ample testimony of the government to ease the burden imposed by the covid19 pandemic.

Health personnel who were present at the event took time to educate the gathering on the pandemic. As a matter of expediency, the people have been asked to remain at home after 8 p.m. and to desist from various social gatherings including the playing of draft, cards and converging at drinking bars.
