Man, 22, allegedly commits suicide in police cell

A 22-year-old man, James Yaw Doggi, has allegedly hanged himself at the Oforikrom police cells in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti region.

The deceased is said to have hanged himself with a piece of woollen carpet few hours after his arrest in the morning of Friday, December 29, 2017.

The late Doggi, a father of one and a carpenter, was arrested by police after his wife lodged a complaint at the Oforikrom police station for his arrest. This was disclosed by the deceased mother, Madam Akua Janado who could not hold her tears during an interview with Adehye FM's Elisha Adarkwah.

She further called for swift investigations to unravel why her late son allegedly hanged himself in the custody of the police.

The Manhyia Divisional Police Commander, ACP Kwaku Buah, confirmed the incident to Adehye FM's Elisha Adarkwah. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy.
