Asamankese, Aug. 2, GNA -- A circuit court sitting at Asamankese in the Eastern Region has sentenced Mr Eric Arthur, 35, machine operator of the Ghana Consolidated Diamonds Limited, at Akwatia to six months' imprisonment in hard labour for assaulting Miss Christiana Asamoah, a teacher of the G.C.D.
Amanfrom Kindergarten. The court, presided over by Mr S. S. Appiah, also imposed a fine of 800,000 cedis on Arthur or in default 18 months' imprisonment, 250,000 is to be given to the complainant as compensation if paid.
The accused was also to sign a bond to be of good behaviour for three years or go to jail for three years if he breaks it. He pleaded guilty.
Prosecuting, Police Detective Inspector Eric Otchere told the court that while the complainant was teaching in her classroom, she heard a commotion outside and, therefore, went to find out what was happening.
Inspector Otchere said Miss Asamoah was told that an eight-year-old son of the accused, who was not a pupil at the school, had incited two kindergarten children to fight.
Miss Asamoah was not happy and, therefore, asked the boy to leave the campus. Soon after, Mr Arthur went to the school with the son, who pointed at Miss Asamoah alleging that she had beaten him, the court was told.
The prosecutor said without asking the teacher any question, Mr Arthur pounced on her, beat her up and kicked her with his feet.
Two teachers, who were around, however, managed to intervene to save the colleague from further brutality. A report was made to the Police and the accused was arrested.
In passing sentence, Mr. Appiah warned that there had been reports in other parts of the country of relatives assaulting teachers and warned that he would impose a stiffer sentence on any person brought before the court on a similar charge next time.
