Garu (U/E) Feb 3, GNA- A 37-year-old man from Namori a village near Garu has been placed in Police custody for allegedly butchering his sister-in-law to death for accusing him of rape.

Tieka Simba was said to have taken advantage of his elder brother's absence and forcefully had sexual intercourse with the deceased, Abena Ndego, 35.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the incident, Bawku Municipal Police Commander, Chief Superintendent David Sampana, said Tieku decided to pay frequent visit to his in-law when his elder brother left her to Kumasi three years ago, with four children. He said it was during one of such visits that led the suspect to rape the deceased.

Chief Supt. Sampana said Tieka did not take kindly when Abena reported the incident to her parents, who in tend invited him to ascertain the truth.

He said Tieka refused to meet his in-laws in spite of persistent appeals from his wife and parents for fear of being disgraced for his incestuous act.

Chief Supt. Sampana said on Monday January 31 2004, the suspect with a sharp cutlass attacked Abena who had gone to a forest with her 15-year-old daughter to burn charcoal.

She was hacked on the hand and neck whilst both wrists were severed off leading to excessive bleeding.

The Police Commander explained that the daughter who sensed danger, rushed to the village to raise the alarm, compelling people to rush to the forest to find Abena lying dead in a pool of blood.

He said the inhabitants organized a search party to find her assailant, but the suspect who realised he was being pursued rushed to the Garu Police where he surrendered and confessed his crime.

The Police had a hectic time to disperse an angry crowd that thronged the Police Station demanding the release of the suspect for instant justice.

The body of the victim has since been buried after autopsy.
