Man convicted over school fees

A driver who assaulted a woman for demanding the payment of their children"s fees has been convicted to a fine of GHC600.

Prosper Alorbu aged 40 in default would go to jail for 14 days.

In addition, Alorbu has been ordered by the court to pay GHC500 as compensation to the victim.

This was after Alorbu had pleaded guilty to the charge of physical abuse on his first appearance and was remanded to be sentenced to today.

The case as presented by Detective Inspector Kofi Atimbire was that the complainant was Theresa Hodunu and Alorbu are both residents at La in Accra.

The complainant and accused person cohabited and as a result had three children. On January 12 this year, accused person unceremoniously left home and sought solace with a new lover.

Prosecution said Alorsu stopped catering for his kids and declined to pay their fees. The complainant called him on phone and demanded money to pay their wards fees but to no avail.

On February 14 this year, at about 10:57pm, the complainant called him again on phone over payment of fees and he got infuriated and exchanged words.

Some hours later, accused drove home and found the complainant in the bed. He beat the complainant mercilessly in the presence of the children.

The complainant who sustained injuries reported the incident to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service who issued her with a medical form to seek medical attention.

Accused later charged.
