After playing hide and seek with the police, a 42-year-old businessman has finally been arrested for allegedly stealing an amount of GHc36,000 belonging to his fiancée and duping four other persons to the tune of GHc134,528 under the pretext of supplying them some quantities of cement.

Suspect Kweku Gyasi allegedly committed the offence in April this year but went into hiding after the matter was reported to the police.

DSP Edward Tetteh, the Tesano District Police Commander, who confirmed the arrest to DAILY GUIDE, said the suspect had been placed on police wanted list since April this year.

Five months ago, the Tesano police received a complaint from one Patience Asante, fiancée of the suspect, that thieves had broken into their home at Tesano and had stolen an amount of GHc36,000.

According to the complainant, who came to the station in the company of suspect Gyasi, they were selling cement and other building materials in their store at Abom Junction when the thieves broke into their apartment and stole the money.

Police Investigations

When police personnel visited the said apartment, it was discovered that the room had been ransacked by the said thieves after breaking the door.

Some experts from the police headquarters were invited to the scene to pick finger prints of the said thieves from the house while the Tesano police continued investigations into the case.

Police investigations later revealed that suspect Gyasi was the only person who returned to the apartment on April 5, 2015 that day after they left in the morning.

Police gathered that while the couple were busily selling the wares, the complainant told the would-be husband that she was very hungry and that he should rush to the house and prepare something for them to eat.

Suspect Gyasi allegedly went into the house, ransacked the place and took the money and created a scene of a break-in, after which he left to his sister’s house to prepare the food.

When the couple got to the house that evening after work and detected that thieves had broken into their home, the suspect again led the would-be wife to report the matter to the police.

Suspect Gyasi, during the course of police investigations, attempted to tamper with some of the evidences in the house but police restricted him.

Fraud

Immediately it came to light that the suspect was behind the stealing of the money, four other persons who deal in cement and other construction materials, also came to report that the suspect had defrauded them to the tune of GHc134,528.

According to the complainants, suspect Gyasi collected various amounts of money—GHc31,000, GHc24,600, GHc34,928 and GHc44,528—from them a year ago to supply them cement but never redeemed his promise.

DSP Tetteh revealed that the Accra Regional Police Command arrested suspect Gyasi in another fraud case and while investigations were ongoing, the Tesano Police had a hint of his arrest and went for him last Monday.

“Tema police also want him to assist them investigate another fraud case; so as soon as we are done with our investigations, we would hand him over to Tema Police,” he added.

Gyasi is currently in police custody assisting in investigations.
