The police have apprehended a 25-year-old rubbish collector at Agbogbloshie allegedly having in his possession a locally made pistol, loaded with six live cartridges.
The Accra Regional Police Command has said that Fatawu Feseini was found with the gun while fighting a colleague at the market.
The Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Efia Tenge, told DAILY GUIDE that Agbogbloshie of late has been used as a haven where some suspected criminals hide and ply their trade.
Due to that, she said the regional command has intensified its patrols and intelligence mechanisms in the area to make sure individuals who possess firearms without authority are apprehended.
On February 19, 2018, at about 12:45 pm, police intelligence led to the arrest of Fatawu Feseini with the locally manufactured pistol.
ASP Efia Tenge said intelligence gathered indicated that the suspect – a known rubbish collector who had been using a tricycle – was one day prevented from dumping his refuse at a site near Sikkens scrap yard at Agbogbloshie by one of the scrap dealers.
The said scrap dealer also threatened to report Fatawu to the authorities, if he was found dumping refuse at the place.
“This threat did not go down well with the suspect and so on that February 19, he armed himself with the pistol and went to attack the scrap dealer for preventing him from dumping refuse in the area,” she claimed.
In the course of their argument, Fuseini pulled the pistol at the victim but some of the traders around came to pull the two men apart, disarmed the suspect and called on the police for assistance.
Personnel deployed to the scene apprehended Fatawu and brought him to the station for questioning.
He is still in custody assisting the police with investigation.
