Ajumako (C/R), Sept. 19, GNA - The Ajumako District magistrate's court has remanded one Kobina Ebo in police custody for attempting to commit suicide while in police cell on defilement charges. Ebo 40, pleaded not guilty and would re-appear before the court on Sept. 23, 2009.
Police Chief Inspector Emmanuel Maxwell Akorley, prosecution, told the court presided over by Mr Kwasi Boakye Enimil that Ebo was in the custody of Ajumako police for defiling a 13-year old primary one pupil. He said On Sept. 13, 2009 at about 12.30 hours, the policemen on duty heard an unusual noise in the cells and when they went there they saw that Ebo had used his shirt and tied it to a nail in the cell in an attempt to commit suicide.
Later in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, the Ajumako district Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Seth Tay, said that Ebo claimed his attempt to commit suicide was due to the influence of alcohol.
He said sometime this September, Ebo defiled the girl in his room and warned her not to tell anybody, else she would die. ASP Tay said the victim reported her ordeal to her parents who later informed the police and Ebo was arrested. The Police commander appealed to parents to monitor the movement of their children, especially the girl child.
