Man jailed for attempting to sell own child

Goaso (B/A), June 25, GNA - A 23 year-old unemployed who attempted to sell his six-year-old son at the cost of GHC 30,000 has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by a circuit court in Goaso for child trafficking. Christian Yeboah pleaded guilty at the court presided over by Kwame Osei Gyamfi and was convicted accordingly.

Prosecuting, Detective Inspector Francis Azambeo told the court that

the complainants are police officers stationed at Goaso, while the convic t is the father of the victim. He said the convict resided at Dormaa-Ahenkro whilst the victim stay ed with his mother at Fianko, a village near Kasapin.

Inspector Azambeo said on April 16 this year the convict decided to travel to Libya so went to Fianko and contacted a witness in the case several times to assist him get somebody to buy either a human being or human parts. He said on April 28, the witness informed the police about the intention of the convict and the police arranged and deployed two officer s with the witness to go and negotiate with the convict.

Inspector Azambeo said during the negotiations the convict priced th e son at GHC 30,000 but later agreed to offer the boy for GHC 17,000. He said the witness and the police officers told the convict to accompany them to Goaso where they would withdraw money from the bank to pay him. The trio after withdrawing the money paid the convict and after he h ad handed over the victim to the buyers the police arrested him.
