Adamu Yakubu, 78, who was hit by a bullet, died on the spot during the enskinment of Nido Sulenana as Tishigu Naa, at Tishigu a suburb of Tamale on Saturday afternoon.
Three persons, who were injured in the incident, were admitted to the hospital, but two of them were discharged.
The police had apprehended 11 suspects believed to be directly involved in the incident.
The Northern Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) George Tuffour, confirmed the tragedy to journalists in Tamale on Sunday.
He said the calamity occurred when a group opposed the enskinned of Sulenana by the Choggu, a regent, against the orders of the police.
DCOP Tuffour said a gun and knife battle ensued, resulting in the death of Yakubu and the injury of three people.
He explained that upon a tip off that the ceremony could result in confusion, the police asked the kingmakers not to organise the event, and they (kingmakers) agreed to the directive.
DCOP Tuffour said the arrested persons would be screened and those found culpable would be prosecuted in court.
DCOP Tuffour said that three other persons who allegedly assaulted someone on Sunday morning in connection with the Tishigu chieftaincy affair had also been arrested.
He gave the assurance that the police would handle the case professionally.**
